Last Saturday, a man drove his car into a crowded section of the Venice Beach boardwalk, one of the most popular outdoors spots in Los Angeles. One person was killed and 11 were injured.
Chillingly, it seems that this was no car accident. At this point, authorities think the man who hit the 12 people did so intentionally.
Surveillance video from the scene indicates that the 38-year-old Los Angeles man who is a suspect parked near the boardwalk for awhile before intentionally plowing into the pedestrians. Later, he walked into a Santa Monica police station and said he was involved in the incident. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and, at last word, was being held in jail in lieu of $1 million bail.
Not much is known about the man at this point, such as whether he has a criminal record, a history of mental illness or any sort of motive at all to commit such a senseless act of violence.
The woman who was killed in the incident was an Italian national who was visiting the Los Angeles area on her honeymoon. The death of any innocent person is a sad occasion, of course, but since this woman was just starting her married life with the man she loved, her death seems especially sad.
Because we know that this incident has saddened and shocked many people in Los Angeles, if any relevant information emerges, we will be sure to consider writing an update and publishing it on this blog.
