As the weather continues to improve with spring right around the corner, more and more people will be out and about. Whether they are out for a leisurely stroll, out for a run or walking their dog; pedestrians need to be mindful of their surroundings. The same can be said for vehicle operators when it comes to spotting pedestrians. Here are some safety tips for pedestrians and motor vehicles in Los Angeles, California.
Drivers should always be on the lookout for pedestrians when operating their vehicle, even if the vehicle has the right of way. Not all pedestrians will abide by the rules of the road, which is why drivers must take extra caution when approaching intersections. Drivers should look twice when approaching an intersection and make eye contact with pedestrians.
Drivers should always yield to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks. This makes it easier for everyone involved, especially if the pedestrian is in the middle of the crosswalk when you approach. You should also give the pedestrian plenty of time to cross the street and not start inching towards them.
It is always a good idea to slow down when around pedestrians, whether or not they have entered a crosswalk. When you see pedestrians and slow down, it makes it easier to come to a complete stop if they walk out into the street.
Always watch for pedestrians when making a turn. Pedestrians crossing the street with a green light have the right of way. If you are making a right turn on red after coming to a complete stop you should be on the lookout for pedestrians crossing, as they have the green light.
When driving in a school zone, be sure to go the posted speed limit, or a little under, and always be on the lookout for children. Even though there might be crossing guards posted, it doesn’t mean the children will pay attention to them or listen to their instructions.
