Many people listen to music in the car. Some drivers would tell you that they have the radio on every time they get behind the wheel. Even if they do not listen to the radio, they may have albums or playlists that they stream from their phone.
In some cases, calming or relaxing music can actually help people become better drivers. Researchers have studied driving with and without music, sometimes by selecting a playlist intentionally for the driver. But music can also have a negative impact on driving ability, and there are two main components to consider.
The speed and volume
Details like the speed, tempo and volume of the music are very important. Faster and more aggressive music tends to cause drivers to speed up, which can increase the chance of an accident. It can also make it more likely that they will make significant driving errors or overlook things that they would have noticed otherwise. If the music is too loud, it can be fairly overwhelming for the brain, so it acts as a form of driving distraction, even when the driver is looking at the road.
Personal preference
Additionally, drivers tend to make more mistakes when they are listening to music that they chose themselves. Naturally, outside of the study, this is what most drivers do almost every time. But it can be dangerous because they may get distracted, singing along with a song they love or paying more attention to the music than the road.
